Essentially, Hawthorne presents us with two cryptic tableaux connected by an elliptical narrative, and leaves it to the reader to construct for himself the story which it implies.

The second—and final—tableau shows us the same two women reunited in old age. It is a memorable tale which effectively combines the themes of love, obsession, and death, and weaves about them a haunting gothic atmosphere. Still, I found it more puzzling than mysterious; I for one could have used a little more help constructing the story. But it is precisely this elliptical effect, I believe, that Hawthorne wishes to create for us.

Poe, “Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales” – American Literature Anthology Project

Methinks it glimmers to-and-fro in my mind, like the light and shadow across the Old Maid's face. And now, 'tis gone! Jan 13, Kim rated it it was ok Shelves: two-star , goodbye , r-r. It was first published in the "New England Magazine" in It was also published in his book of short stories; "Twice-Told Tales" published in I have that book here in the house somewhere, although that's not where I read the story.

In fact I probably have this story in a number of books laying about the house, especially those marked "gothic" or "horror". Ah, but now on to the story itself, when Poe reviewed "Twice-Told Tales" although he praised the collection as a whole he found this particular story "objectional Even with the thoughtful and analytic, there will be much trouble in penetrating its entire import.

Well I'm not sure about everyone else, but Poe knew what he was talking about when it comes to me. I really liked the story, I was interested in what happened to the young man who was dead at the beginning, I wanted to know who the two young women were in the bedroom with the dead man, I was almost with the old woman who went to every funeral wrapped in a white sheet, and I have almost no idea what was going on in the story.

So someone please read it, the version I read was only ten pages long, and tell me what in the world was going on. This is why I like long books, or more pages I would have figured it out, ten pages not enough information. I'll give it two stars for now, maybe three once it actually makes sense. It's worth the time to read. An unexplained ghostly tale. Reminded me strongly of Faulkner's 'A Rose for Emily'. Oct 15, Erin added it Recommended to Erin by: Gothic fiction.
