It just rubs me the wrong way that a guy would fall for his dead twin brothers wife, and that she would fall for him. There's just too much grief and wrongness mixed in that kind of relationships, I never believe it would work. Aug 16, Pam rated it liked it Shelves: summer-challenge. This book was ok. My Cowboy Heart (The Cowboys, #1) by Z.A. Maxfield
Oct 14, Carol [Goodreads Addict] rated it really liked it Shelves: cowboys , contemporary-romance. Sam Mendes had a terrible childhood. But he knew early on that he had a way with animals. Now as an adult, he was a famous horse whisperer. He had his heart broken in the worst of ways, more like ripped out and stomped on. Sam has never fully recovered having lost his faith in love. Sam is asked to the Ford Ranch to see if he can help a stallion that no one can get near.
She is a strong, hard working, self reliant woman that loves her horses with all her heart. Mia Ford might have been born into money. But she is determined to make her own way in life. Sam Mendes is her last chance. Mia has always had a little crush on the famous horse whisperer. But when he walked onto her ranch with his arrogant attitude and my way or the highway way of doing things, she felt like booting him right off the property.
But she needed him too much so she swallowed her pride. Mia and Sam are definitely attracted to each other but Sam tries his best to put the brakes on. Mia is technically his boss and she definitely is a relationship kind of girl. Sam will never allow himself to care for another woman again. Flings are all he is capable of and she deserves so much more. But, I have to admit I kind of got tired of him letting his past experience with love ruining his chances with Mia. He really did get badly hurt but it was evident that Mia was nothing like his ex.
I had a bit of trouble feeling the connection between these two for a good part of the book. He truly cared and was dedicated to helping him. I loved the ending of the book. I finally felt the connection between Sam and Mia and the book left me with a smile. View all 18 comments. This is a story of two people who clash upon first meeting but have an obvious attraction to one another all the while working on a ranch trying to save a horse from being put down.
Sam is a top notch horse trainer who has been called in by Mia to see if he can tame a horse that she is determined to save. The ending on this one did actually surprise me a bit though and I actually did rather enjoy it. So in the end I did find this one a nice enough start to the series and would see what comes next. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley. View all 3 comments. Thank you St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Mia Ford grew to love horses since she was a kid.
She came from a wealthy family and they owned a ranch. It's always a first impression if someone came from a rich family, the children were spoiled brats. However, Mia embodies the opposite. She's independent and never relies on her family's fortune. As a horsewoman, she trains hard and competes in every show jumping competition.
Her perseverance, determination and passion Thank you St. Her perseverance, determination and passion is admirable. Recently, she acquired her best friend's horse but the stallion was stubborn and reckless. So, her father hired Sam Mendes , a popular horse whisperer and a guy she had a crush on. These two started as enemies and have bad impressions with each other. They just never get along and it's amusing to see their constant bickering which leads to attraction.
I like stories about crush-to-lovers or enemies-to-lovers and this book started good but after five chapters it slowly gets boring. The sexual tension and romance between them was obvious but it just simmers and I craved for more. I'm slightly disappointed with Sam because he's an annoying and coward hero. He's more dramatic than Mia. Just not a huge fan of him. The story wraps up with a happy ever after but it's bland and abrupt. I'm glad Sam worked out on his issues and make up with Mia.
I might pick up the next book because it's Tanner's story Mia's brother. This series on a good start and hopefully to see the improvement on the sequel. Full review posted. View all 5 comments. My Rating: 3. The positive periods in the storyline appeared all too brief and fleeting, although I greatly enjoyed their relaxed and happy periods, steamy affair, amusing humor, and the gentle and thoughtful use of the depicted rehabilitative horse therapies.

The money and the bragging rights alone make this an opportunity not to be passed up except for Mia Ford. After being burned in the past by a woman, Sam keeps things simple by focusing all his time and attention on his book tour, his ranch and side jobs. Women don't factor in for the long haul and that's just the way he likes it. Mia is grateful to have someone like Sam, who really cares for the anim As a renown horse whisperer trainer, Sam Mendes is called in to rehab a horse on the Ford Ranch.
Mia is grateful to have someone like Sam, who really cares for the animals placed under his care but she's just as attracted to his brooding eyes and his built bod. He's the cliche'd tall dark and grouchy. What follows is an angsty love story and an H that has to battle his own past to have a chance and happily ever after with his h. What I liked: The setting of this story is deep in ranch life and the love of horses. It charmed me and gave this kind of a comfy relaxed feel to whole story. I found myself really enjoying the word scenery the author provided.
Mia was also a likable h, she was determined, caring and just plain nice. Maybe too nice? At least when it came to Sam, she was! His past was always lurking in the background and he was kind of just compliant to it. Sort of resigned to live alone and never trust another woman again. He has some epic moments or jack-ass-ery and his grovelling was a must. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Neither are virgin Cheating: None, they both remain exclusive to each other.
Not a manwhore but definitely not celibate. He tries to bury his head in the sand for a while before finally seeing the light! Lol : Main Pursuer of relationship: Mia is the one the initially throws all the right signals Sam's way and also the first one to think of them as more than just friends with benefits. Triggers: Indecisive H, h who tries too hard. View 2 comments. Nov 24, D. It's been a while since I've read a cowboy romance and this one hit the spot nicely. Sam Mendes has found fame doing what he loves. He would rather deal with horses than people any day. He is offered the chance to get away from the fame for a while, and back to what he loves best.
They call him the horse whisperer, but this one may even be too much for him. Headstrong Mia loves horses and works hard for what she has, even though she comes from money. She is competitive, proud and beautiful. Mia's It's been a while since I've read a cowboy romance and this one hit the spot nicely. Mia's dad has hired Sam to help with an unruly horse. From the offset, the sexual tension is dripping off these two and they rub each other up the wrong way. Both want the best for the horses, but they also want their own way.
He likes to work alone. She wants to help. He's cocky and she's stubborn. The horse is special and is going to take a unique bond to win him over. Sam is an alpha male and Mia is head strong which is my favourite combination. This book is about taming the beast, but maybe that's not just the horse ; Cowboy stole my heart had a really good realistic storyline, and I enjoyed the journey.

Sam never sat out to make a name for himself teaching others how to train and handle horses, but it was a talent that came naturally and a position he fell into at a time in life when he needed something to help heal his mind. When these two first come together sparks fly and emotions roil.

However, Sam has a history that has left him hurt and bitter and he remains adamant that what they share can never be anything more than just sex. The beginning felt a bit slow and I found myself skimming. I did get a bit tired of Sam keeping Mia at a distance. And when the end came I felt there needed be some real groveling take place of which there was not. Overall, I actually enjoyed this book, a lot.
Heart of a Cowboy
It was a bit angsty in places, but not to the point of making me cringe and the steam factor was as high as the chili peppers Mia and Sam ate on their first date. I will definitely be watching for the next book in the series as well as checking out previous books from this author. This is an honest review of an advanced copy provided by NetGalley and St. What I liked about the book I liked that for a change the main characters weren't typical Texas type characters, I liked that Sam was a "horse whisperer" instead of just another rodeo cowboy or ranch hand and that Mia was professional show jumper and despite being the King ranch heiress she worked hard for everything she has.
I enjoyed the over all story and how sexy it was, but, and this is just personal preference, I didn't care for the writing style how some of it was written, the way it was worded, just didn't do it for me and really editors catch those words that are different inside the states, in the states it's flashlight not torch and it's spelled yogurt not yoghurt I know it's that way in England, NZ, and Australia and many other other places but it's really annoying that a TEXAS cowboy uses torch I really don't think Sam is that much of an anglophile to use that word.
Nitpicking I know but it bugged me. Unless it was fixed for actual publication than just ignore me. I also think Sam is kind of a dick, especially to his family and the ending was eye roll worthy, it disappointed me that she went with that path. It had such a great beginning it just went downhill from there. Mia King bought a horse, a stallion that can't be handled. She has a sentimental attachment to Tex and isn't willing to put him down no matter what.
So her Father calls in the famous horse whisperer Sam Mendes. Sam just got done with a tour and was looking forward to time off with his dog, his sister and her twin girls, his best friend and finally some time on his own ranch, but one call from the tycoon Walter King about a stallion has him intrigued and since it's not far from his own ranch he decides to take a look. Once he sees Tex he knows he has to work with this horse, even if he did start off on the wrong foot with his owner Mia. Sam made assumptions about Mia and it caused her to instantly dislike him, but she set him straight and after seeing her ride and actually getting to know her he realized just how wrong he was about her.
Once they get that sorted it doesn't take them long before they kiss and wind up in bed with each other. Sam needs to keep his heart separate from Mia and their relationship a past hurt keeps him from realizing just how perfect it is. Even though Mia agreed to keep their feeling separate she couldn't help falling in love with him.
Overall, I loved the issue with Tex and how that played out and I loved the beginning but Sam wasn't very desirable, he kind of ruined the book for me. I know it seems like this is a bad review but it wasn't horrible, there are just certain aspects of it that bugged me, but you decide if you want to read it, you may end up liking it. Despite many inaccurate negative assumptions, the two humans are drawn to each other as they strive to rehabilitate the horse. This is a delightful, well-written, emotional story of love helping heal heartbreak and more. It has great human and animal characters who are brought vividly to life within the pages of the story.
It is a tale of following your heart and daring to dream, a journey of discovery with love and redemption as the end goal. I look forward to reading more in this series and have no hesitation in recommending this story to anyone who enjoys emotive cowboy romances. She overhears Jake calling Cyler, meets Cyler and there is definitely attraction BUT she must keep things professional, right? This book is about family. It is about anger, hurt and forgiveness. It is about the impact humans and animals have on our lives.
It is also a romance. This is the first book I have read by this author and I enjoyed it. I will look for her work in the future. Dec 17, Brittany rated it liked it Shelves: romance. It is a really quick read so if you are looking for something feel good that you won't have to think too hard about the plot then this is the book for you!
The book didn't breaking any new ground. The story was predictable but I was still able to enjoy it. There wasn't any unnecessary drama and the characters in the story seemed to be down to earth. I think that the relationship between the two main characters happened a bit too quickly for my taste. There was a bit of insta-love thrown into the mix which was bothersome. There wasn't really a lot of time to establish a relationship though considering that the book was only about pages.
It felt like more of a short story than a book. I think that many of my favorite parts of the book involved Jack, Cyler's father. He didn't mince words and was hilarious! Sep 29, Mary rated it really liked it. Such a surprise for me. Laken has a true calling to work as a plaintive care nurse, helping patients in their final days. Her next assignment is Jack, an ornery, stubborn rancher, with a heart of gold when you get past all his bluster. As she helps him prepare for the inevitable, Jack reaches out to his estranged son Cyler, never expecting Cyler to visit.
Oh Cyler. His father truly decimated their relationship but when he gets the call that Jack is dying, well, and his guilt drives him home. Wha Such a surprise for me. All the while, Laken is there as a calm and driving force to help both men with this most difficult time. A beautiful story of love, forgiveness and compassion. They're both mischievous and full of life. They look at the world through their own colored glasses but are willing to accept the colors of the other. I loved this book from the bottom of my heart. The feels. The love. The lessons. Yep, I said it the lessons. Vayden may be a romance writer, but in Heart of a Cowboy she's teaching us more about loving life than how to fall in love -- and I felt it to my core!
Oct 14, Romancing the Book rated it really liked it Shelves: contemporary , romance , western. My emotions were engaged from the first page since the premise for the story is about Jack and his cancer, his need for a hospice nurse and Jack being reunited with his estranged son, Cyler. There are many layers to the story with both lightness and darkness and I felt laughter and tears as I read.
There is a realism to the story and how it and the characters Reviewed by JoAnne Book provided by NetGalley Originally posted at Romancing the Book Heart of a Cowboy definitely has a lot of heart in it.
There is a realism to the story and how it and the characters were portrayed. I liked that so much of the past was brought in so that we could understand the characters. The story takes a few twists and turns but all the story lines are interwoven nicely. Watching Jack and Cyler come to terms with each other was both heartbreaking and heartwarming especially as Cyler lets go of his hate a little at a time. The book has a nice cover and characters that were well developed with a lot of depth to them. We learned about them a little at a time. She brought out the best in him and they were so good together.
Their chemistry is off the charts. There are family and friends, opportunists, Margaret the horse, the ranch and its surroundings, lots of coffee, hate, bitterness, anger, sorrow, sadness, illness, romance, loving and love. The descriptions of the land, the river and the ranch were vivid and made me feel that I was there. There is wonderful closure especially with the epilogue. I loved the passage from Ecclesiastes that was given.

The blurb focuses on the romantic relationship developing between Cyler Myer and Laken Garlington yet there is so much more to the story with Cyler's father preparing himself for losing the battle against cancer, and the past mistakes that he wants to correct before it is too late.
The relationship that develops between Laken, her patients Jack, and Cyler is beautiful in its raw roughness at the last moments of Jack's life. Everything that happens in the story develops from those poignant last attempts to make things right, giving all the emotions a deeper, profound foundation. Past sins, misunderstandings, and faults in life had alienated Jack and Cyler long time ago. What seems like unforgivable actions on Jack's part had driven them apart.
Now facing each other again Jack and Cyler have to decide how they want to cross that one point in life where there is no return from, with angry revenge in mind, or with forgiveness and fond memories. Laken is one of those people who can connect with nearly anyone, yet the connection she feels for Cyler is different. The sparks are flying, the passion is tangible, the possibilities reflect in their eyes, but Cyler being Laken's patient's son could cause some problems down the road if they act upon their budding feelings and took the step to a more personal relationship either of them were prepared to take.
The story does have a rather heartrending undertone that is lightened up with a delightful banter and jokes, romantic interludes between Cyler and Laken, and Jack's always ready to argue attitude. And while Laken and Cyler's love story is a beautiful and passion-filled tale of finding your soulmate at an unexpected time in your life, the way Jack prepares himself to leave the life, to die, had something very delegate and graceful in its breathtaking beauty and respect towards life. This new author to me left me in awe of the depth of the emotions she draws out through the story, going from morose to wonder and delight, with her words, painting the beauty of life at each of its states.
Laken Garlington is a special person inside and out. Her job isn't easy and she always gives one hundred percent to her patients. Her latest patient will prove to be one that gives her just as much as she give him.
The Heart of a Cowboy (formerly published as Creed’s Honor)
Cyler Myer never expected to be back on the ranch after all that happened between him and his father. Coming back was supposed to a quick in and out trip, but all that changes when he see the nurse hired to care for his father. The attraction between Laken and Cyler is electric and only Laken Garlington is a special person inside and out. The attraction between Laken and Cyler is electric and only continues to grow the more time they spend today. Can Laken and Cyler find a way to make a relationship work with their business schedules? Will Cyler and his father be able to mend fences before it's too late?
And how will Cyler handle things when his past comes knocking on his door once again? Heart of a Cowboy is a stunning read that captives the read from start to finish. The reader quickly connects with Laken with her wittiness, positive outlook, and heart of gold. The passion she puts into caring for Jack is endearing. I love how she doesn't take his crap and gives just as good as she gets. She truly is brilliant. Cyler is a rough, tough, hardworking cowboy that doesn't let anything or anyone stand in his way. He's built a company from nothing and he knows what it takes to get a job done.
I love that even though he's been hurt in the past, he still takes the risk to win Laken's heart. It's all the little things he does for her that makes a reader swoon over and over again. I loved the relationship between Jack and everyone. He may not be the nicest person in the world at times, but he has a good heart. I love how he pushed Laken and Cyler together, it's priceless. I really enjoyed Heart of a Cowboy more than I expected.
I was excited to start this book and really sad to see it end. The storyline was compelling, the romance was alluring, and the banter was stunning. My Cowboy Heart
This is the first full-length novel of Vayden's that I've gotten a chance to read. I'd read a novella of hers that was in an anthology previously. So I was pretty excited to see what she had to offer. I got even more excited when I dived in and found that it was set in my neck of the woods well kind of I always find it exciting when an author writes about another part of Washington that's not Seattle.
I will tell you I had a few starts and stops trying to read this.
