Despite having misgivings about giving up her job, the usual murder, mayhem and suspects soon get the book cracking on at a good pace. Looking for a brilliant best-selling murder mystery with a feisty female detective?

Hillary will retire in a few weeks. But can her boss get Hillary to change her mind by putting her on a murder investigation? The victim is found dead with his head bashed in with a piece of wood. Michael Ivers was a gambler and a notorious womaniser. He had few friends and there is a long list of people who might have wanted him dead.

Hillary wants to solve her final case as a police officer and she has just days left to find out who killed him. To add to her problems, her old enemy, ex-Sergeant Frank Ross is back on the scene and is a prime suspect.

This is a crime mystery full of well-observed characters, which will have you gripped from start to the absolutely thrilling conclusion. Consequently, she knows how the system works, and is fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. Consequently, she knew how the system worked, and was always fiercely loyal to the force without being blinkered to its faults. Forced to retire early through no fault of her own, she has now returned to the force as a civilian consultant on cold cases. As this is the final book in the series, I want to say very little about the plot — except that it neatly ties up all the loose ends from the series.

I also felt that the subject matter was somewhat darker than any of the previous cases. Faith Martin was born in Oxford, and has spent all her life within twenty miles of the university city, even working at Somerville College for five years before turning to writing full-time. A popular writer for over 25 years, she has had nearly 50 novels published so far.
